Henry Brainerd McClellan grew up in Philadelphia, had four brothers who fought for the Union, and was cousin to George B. McClellan, twice commander of the Army of the Potomac. But in 1861, H. B. McClellan enlisted as a private in the Third Virginia Cavalry. In March 1863, he became Adjutant General to JEB Stuart, and after Stuart’s death, served under his successor, Wade Hampton. His memoir was first published in 1885 under the title The Life and Campaigns of Major-General J.E.B. Stuart.
