From the jacket notes: “Upson was a common Union soldier who fought with Grant at Vicksburg and Chattanooga and marched with Sherman through Georgia and the Carolinas to be part of the Victory Parade in Washington on May 20, 1865. His schooling was limited, and he assumed limited knowledge on the part of his readers. The result is exceptional richness of detail as to food, clothing, equipment, diversions, officers, marches, battles, and the country and people of Dixie. More important still, With Sherman to the Sea sheds a brilliant light on the motivation and character of the men who wore the Blue.”
