Admiral Raphael Semmes was commander of C.S.S. Alabama, during 1862-1865. From verso of title page: “The Confederate Raider Alabama comprises selected chapters from Memoirs of Service Afloat During the War Between the States, by Raphael Semmes.” Memoirs of Service Afloat was first published in 1869.
