The Antietam battlefield was photographed by Alexander Gardner and James F. Gibson in the immediate aftermath of the battle, in September 1862; displayed in a NYC gallery a month later, these photos were among the first images ever to show fallen soldiers on the field of battle. Frassanito juxtaposes the old images with new photos of the current appearance of the battlefield. He also researches the background of the soldiers who are identifiable in the pictures of Gardner and Gibson, and reviews the action of every section of the Antietam site. A vivid work, important to anyone interested in the legacy of the war.
